November 20, 2000- Named Midland-Wachusett A League All-Stars for
2000 were Bryan Marotta and Thomas Laakso for their top 10 performances in the League Championship.
Marotta was also selected a Worcester Telegram & Gazette All-Star for his fourth place finish in
the MIAA Central Massachusetts Cross Country Division I Championship.
November 18, 2000- Fitchburg High School’s Bryan Marotta
and Tom Laakso concluded the men’s cross season Saturday morning by representing the
Red Raiders in the 2000 All State Division I Cross Country Championship held Saturday
morning at Tufts University’s Farm Course in Grafton.
Marotta toured the 5k course in 17:01.6 to finish 32nd, while fellow co-captain Laakso
was 64th in 17:36.0. Marotta improved upon his position in last year’s State Meet by
thirteen places, while Laakso improved seventeen places from his 1999 performance. Both
juniors, Marotta and Laakso, along with nine of the remaining ten team members will
return to next year’s squad, where this year’s experiences should lead to an exciting 2001
season.
November 11, 2000- The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team ran to a solid fifth place finish in the
MIAA Central Massachusetts Cross Country Division I Championships held Saturday
morning at the Gardner Golf Course.
Leading the way for the Red Raiders over the 2.9 mile course were co-captains, Bryan
Marotta, 4th in 15:13, and Tom Laakso, 10th in 15:35. Marotta’s and Laakso’s times
were the first and fourth fastest times run by juniors on the course in Division I.
Not to be outdone, freshmen, Everette Pankey, 42nd, 16:50; Jeremy Reid, 58th, 17:12;
Craig Babineau, 70th, 17:32, and Loi Trieu, 17:51, ran impressively, and were the third,
sixth, seventh, and tenth fastest times run by freshmen in Division I. Combined with the
junior performances, the freshmen efforts bode well for the future of the team. The Red
Raiders entire front seven return to next year’s squad, with sophomore Adam Basilio
rounding out the top seven. Basilio’s time in Saturday’s race was 18:15.
Marotta and Laakso will represent Fitchburg High School, and the Red Raiders, at next
Saturday’s All-State Cross Country Championships hosted at Tufts University’s cross
country course in Grafton. Race time for Division I men is 11:00 a.m.
November 2, 2000- The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team finished their
dual meet season on a winning note, defeating Mid-Wach B Champion Oakmont Regional, 26-30,
at Coggshall Park. Co-Captains Bryan Marotta and Tom Laakso, finished
second, 15:32, and third, 16:10, respectively, while the Red Raiders’
freshmen trio of Everette Pankey, Jeremy Reid, and Loi Trieu, sewed up
the victory for Fitchburg, capturing sixth through eighth. Freshman Craig
Babineau completed the scoring in the meet finishing tenth overall. Also
running well for the Red Raiders were Adam Basilio, Matt Brennan, Adam Renquinha,
Justin Kemp, and Andrew Miner.
Electing not to attend the MSTCA Invitational on Saturday the Red Raiders
will instead turn their focus to next week's MIAA Central Massachusetts Cross Country Division I Championships
to be held next Saturday morning on the Gardner Golf Course. Race time for
Division I is 11:00 a.m.
October 27, 2000 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team ran to a stunning second place finish at the Mid-Wach A
Cross Country Championships held Friday afternoon at Tufts University's Farm Course in Grafton.
Led by the electrifying first place finish of Bryan Marotta, 16:36, and the strong fifth place finish of Tom Laakso,
17:09, the Red Raiders edged out third place Milford by 3 points. Running in their first major
championship race, freshmen Everette Pankey, 19th, 18:44, Jeremy Reid, 23rd, 19:02, and Craig
Babineau, 24th, 19:06, ran impressively to help solidify the Red Raiders’ place in the team standings.
Also running well on the rugged 5k course were freshman, Loi Trieu, 32nd, 19:53, and senior, Matt Brennan, 20:55.
Competing in the Junior Varsity Race were Adam Basilio, 20:08, Adam Renquinha, 20:46, Justin Kemp, 22:53, Chris
Brodeur, 24:50, and Andrew Miner, 30:36.
The Red Raiders host Mid-Wach B Champion Oakmont Regional this Thursday afternoon at Coggshall Park in their final dual meet of the season.
October 23, 2000 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team lost another close contest to
Mid-Wach A rival, Shrewsbury, 25-30, at Coggshall Park. Once again, leading the way
for the Red Raiders over the 2.9 mile course was Bryan Marotta, who finished first in
15:27. Marotta improved on his previous Coggshall best by 2 seconds, which places him
6th on the All-Time list for a Fitchburg High School junior on the Coggshall course.
Teammate, and fellow junior, Tom Laakso was second in a personal record, 15:54, followed
by freshmen, Everette Pankey, 8th, 17:07, Jeremy Reid, 9th, 17:11, and Craig Babineau,
10th, 17:14. Also running well for the Raiders were freshman, Loi Trieu, 17:36, senior,
Matt Brennan, 18:43, sophomore, Adam Basilio, 18:53, junior, Adam Renquinha, 19:02, sophomores, Chris
Brodeur, 21:43, and Andrew Miner, 28:59. Every single member of the Red Raider squad ran a
personal record on the Coggshall course.
The Red Raiders travel to Tufts University in Grafton Friday afternoon to compete in the
Mid-Wach A Cross Country Championships.
October 21, 2000 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross
country team ran to a seventh place finish in the Forty-Fourth Annual Wachusett
Invitational X-Country Meet held Saturday afternoon in Holden. The Red Raiders were
led by Bryan Marotta’s fifth place finish in Varsity A, as he completed the 2.4 mile course
in 12:35. Tom Laakso was 12th in 13:06, followed by Matt Brennan, 54th, 15:18, Adam
Basilio, 58th, 15:39, and Adam Renquinha, 63rd, 16:17. In Junior Varisty A, Chris
Brodeur was 44th in 16:57, and Andrew Miner was 61st in 22:29.
In the combined Freshmen Race the Red Raiders had four runners finish in the top ten led
by Everette Pankey’s 2nd place finish in 13:59. He was followed by Craig Babineau, 4th,
14:17, Jeremy Reid, 9th, 14:42, Loi Trieu, 10th, 14:44, and Justin Kemp, 41st, 16:45.
In the Junior High Race, the Fitchburg Middle Schools were led by Mark Delibertis, who
finished 6th over the 1.36 mile course in 7:42. He was followed by Sean Thomas, 19th,
8:11, Dave Cosenza, 27th, 8:25, Paul Membrino, 33rd, 8:31, Brandon Breau, 61st, 9:14,
and Mike Bellio, 66th, 9:22.

October 17, 2000 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country
team saw their record dip to 1-4, losing a close contest to Mid-Wach A rival, North Middlesex,
25-30, at Coggshall Park. Leading the way for the Red Raiders over the 2.9 mile course was
Bryan Marotta, who finished first in 15:29. Marotta's performance places him 8th on the All-Time
list for Fitchburg High School juniors on the Coggshall course. Also running
a personal record was fellow junior, Tom Laakso, who was third in 16:03. He was followed by freshmen Everette Pankey, 7th, 17:21,
Craig Babineau, 9th, 17:33, and sophomore Adam Basilio, 10th, 18:54. Also running well for the Red Raiders were
Matt Brennan, Loi Trieu, Adam Renquinha, Chris Brodeur, and Andrew Miner.

October 10, 2000 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team
earned their first win of the season, defeating arch-rival Leominster,
15-46, on the Blue Devil’s home course. Leading the way for the Red Raiders
were Bryan Marotta, who finished first over the 2.8 mile course in 15:57, and
Tom Laakso, who was second in 16:26. They were followed closely by freshmen, Everette Pankey, 3rd,
Craig Babineau, 4th, and Jeremy Reid, 5th, as the Red Raiders swept the top 5 spots.
Completing the scoring for Fitchburg were Loi Trieu, 7th, and Adam Basilio, 10th.
Also running well were Matt Brennan, Justin Kemp, Chris Brodeur, Adam Petrullo,
and Andrew Miner.
The Red Raiders host North Middlesex next Monday afternoon at Coggshall Park.
October 7, 2000 - The Fitchburg High School men's freshmen cross country
team provided a glimpse of the future Saturday morning, as they ran to a fourth place finish in the Bay State Invitational held
at Franklin Park in Boston. In the combined Division I and II 3k Freshmen race the team of Everette Pankey, 15th, 11:15, Craig
Babineau, 24th, 11:26, Jeremy Reid, 33rd, 11:36, Loi Trieu, 38th, 11:38, and Justin Kemp, 110th, 13:22, combined for a team
total of 178 points to secure the Red Raiders' position in the team standings.
In the Varsity Division I race, juniors Bryan Marotta and Tom Laakso led the way over the 5k course finishing 11th,
16:55, and 23rd, 17:11, respectively. Also running well for the Varsity were Adam Basilio, Adam Petrullo, and Matt
Brennan. Turning in solid performances in the Junior Varsity Race were Adam Renquinha and Andrew Miner.
Fitchburg travels to Leominster next Tuesday afternoon for a Mid-Wach A meet.
October 2, 2000 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team saw
their record drop to 0-3 overall, and 0-2 in Mid-Wach A, losing a close meet to Milford, 25-32, on
the Scarlet Hawks' home course.
The Red Raiders were paced by Bryan Marotta, who finished first over the 2.6 mile course in
13:18, while teammate Tom Laakso was third in 13:39. Other top finishers for the Red
Raiders were Everette Pankey, 7th, Craig Babineau, 10th, Loi Trieu, 11th, and Jeremy
Reid, 12th. Also running well were Matt Brennan, Adam Basilio, Adam Petrullo, Adam
Renquinha, Chris Brodeur, Justin Kemp, and Andrew Miner.
Fitchburg travels to Franklin Park in Boston Saturday morning to compete in the 9th Annual
Bay State Invitational.
September 21, 2000- The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team saw their
record drop to 0-2, as they lost to powerhouse Wachusett Regional, 18 to 43, at Coggshall Park. Wachusett Regional,
picked as the favorite to win the State Meet by The Harrier, proved too strong for the young Raiders,
as their senior laden team took four of the top six spots.
The Red Raiders were paced by Bryan Marotta, who finished fourth over the 2.9 mile course in
15:51, while teammate Tom Laakso was sixth in 16:46. Both times were PR's on the Coggshall course.
The freshmen foursome of Everette Pankey, 12th, Craig Babineau, 17th, Jeremy Reid, 20th, and Loi Trieu, 22nd,
were outstanding, and bode well for the future of the team. Also running well were Adam Basilio, Adam Petrullo,
Matt Brennan, Chris Brodeur, Justin Kemp, Raymel Scott, Adam Renquinha, and Andrew Miner.
The Red Raiders travel to Milford on Monday, October 2.
September 14, 2000 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team opened their dual meet
season with a loss, falling to Groton-Dunstable, 25 to 35, at Groton. The Raiders were paced by Bryan Marotta, who finished first over the 3.1 mile course in
17:28, while teammate Tom Laakso was second in 17:50. Other top finishers for the
Raiders were freshmen Everette Pankey, 9th, Craig Babineau, 14th, and Jeremy Reid, 16th. Also
running well were Loi Trieu, Adam Basilio, Chris Brodeur, Justin Kemp, Raymel Scott,
Adam Renquinha, Adam Petrullo, Mike Rogers and Andrew Miner.
The Red Raiders host Wachusett Regional next Thursday afternoon at Coggshall Park.
September 1, 2000 - The 2000 Fitchburg High School men's cross country team
completed their first week of practice Friday afternoon at Fitchburg High School. Returning lettermen Bryan Marotta and
Tom Laakso greeted newcomers Everette Pankey, Craig Babineau, Jeremy Reid, Matt Brennan,
Justin Kemp, Adam Renquinha, Chris Brodeur, Loi Trieu, and Andrew Miner to this year's squad as they began preparations
for their season opener at Groton-Dunstable on Thursday, September 14. Pankey, Babineau and Reid, all freshmen, move
up from the Fitchburg middle school cross country program, while Renquinha, a junior, will add his experience to
the squad as he makes the transition from outdoor track to cross country. Newcomers to the sport, senior, Matt Brennan, along with sophomores, Miner and Brodeur,
and freshmen, Kemp and Trieu, provide more depth than was available on last year's team.
