June 14, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men's 2006
outdoor track & field team celebrated the conclusion of the season Wednesday night in
the Fitchburg High School "Cafe", with a "Pot Luck" supper sponsored by the
teams' parents and coaches. The supper was followed by the presentation of individual
and team awards provided by the Fitchburg High School coaching staff, and the athletic
department.
Athletes recognized for their contribution to this year’s team included seniors Dave
Cosenza, Mike Bellio, and Mike Carbone; junior Derek Paine; sophomore Johann
Schuerman; and freshman Joel Gomez. Cosenza received the Most Valuable
Athlete; Bellio and Carbone, the Coaches' Award; Derek Paine, the annual
Bull Goose Loony Award (in memory of throwing Coach Jack Jerszyk); Johann
Schuerman, the Most Improved Athlete; and Joel Gomez, the Freshman
Award. Varsity and Junior Varsity Awards were also presented to all athletes who
have earned the right to wear the "F", for their commitment, hard
work, and dedication to the sport of track & field.
Coach Lavers, Moore, Scott, and Woods would like to personally congratulate the men's
team, and all others who contributed to the program’s success throughout the 2006
season.
June 6 & 8, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men’s
outdoor track & field team combined for a eighteenth place finish in the team standings at
the 24th Annual Central Massachusetts District E Decathlon, held at the College of the
Holy Cross. One hundred and sixty-three athletes representing twenty-seven teams
competed in the two day event that features the 100 meters, long jump, triple jump, high
jump, discus, shot put, javelin, 110 meter high hurdles, 400 meters and 1500 meters.
The Red Raiders were led by seniors Dave Cosenza and Will Schuerman, who finished
55th, 4,334 points, and 47th, 4,311 points, respectively. Cosenza and Schuerman
combined with junior German Valdez, 92nd, 3,565 points, for the team total of 12,210
points.
Also competing for Fitchburg was junior Adam Boudreau, 128th, 3,050 points.
June 5, 2006 - Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track &
field team turned in several outstanding performances on Monday at the 2006 State
Championships held at Fitchburg State College. Senior Malcolm Wilbur finished sixth in
the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.36, scoring Fitchburg’s only points of the meet,
which placed them fifty-seventh overall in the team standings. Junior Garrett Malouin
ran a personal best in the 800 meters, running 2:00.15, to finish seventeenth in the meet,
while the 1600 meter relay team comprised of seniors Wilbur, Will Schuerman, Dave
Cosenza, and freshman, Joel Gomez, finishing nineteenth overall, with a season best
3:33.97.
Fitchburg travels to The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester tomorrow and Thursday
afternoons to compete in the 24th District E Central Massachusetts Decathlon scheduled
to start each day at 3:30 p.m.
May 27, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track & field team ran to an eighth place finish at the 2006 M.I.A.A. Central
Massachusetts Track & Field Championship held Saturday at Fitchburg State College.
Fitchburg was led by senior Malcolm Wilbur, who second in the 100 meters in 11.42, was
fourth in the long jump, 20’ 1.75”, and combined with Will Schuerman, Dave Cosenza,
and Joel Gomez, to finish fourth in the 1600 meter relay with a season best 3:35.37.
Junior Garrett Malouin was the Red Raider’s other leading point scorer, finishing second
in the 800 meters with a career best 2:01.29, while combining with Mike Bellio, Mike
Carbone, and Devan Glenny in the 3200 meter relay team to finish fifth in a season best
8:31.33. Also placing in the top six was Derek Paine, who finished sixth in the discus
with a throw of 122’ 7”.
Also competing for the Red Raiders were Cosenza in the high jump, eighth, 5’ 10”;
Johann Schuerman, 110 meter high hurdles, eleventh, 17.47; Mike Dateo, pole vault,
fourteenth, 10'; Steve Silvar, discus, fifteenth, 111’ 9”; Tim Douglas, discus, sixteenth,
110' 9"; and Will Schuerman, triple jump, twentieth, 38’ 2.75”.
Wilbur, Malouin, and the 1600 meter relay team will represent Fitchburg High School at
next Saturday’s State Championships, also to be held at Fitchburg State College with the
field events scheduled to get underway at 10:00 a.m.
May 23, 2006 - Selected Midland-Wachusett A League All-Stars for 2006
were seniors Mike Carbone, Dave Cosenza, Will Schuerman, and Malcolm Wilbur, junior Derek Paine,
and freshman Joel Gomez by virtue of their first place performances at the league
championship meet held May 18 at Shrewsbury High School. Junior Garrett Malouin was also voted in by
league coaches as an at-large all-star for for his outstanding performances throughout the season
against league competition.
May 20, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track & field team finished fifth Saturday at the Forty-Fifth Annual
Ralph A. Colson Memorial Track & Field Class A Championship held at Crocker Field.
The Red Raiders were led once again by Malcolm Wilbur, who captured the 100 meter
dash in 11.52, finished third in the long jump, 19’ 9”, while combing with Dave Cosenza,
Will Schuerman, and Joel Gomez, to finish sixth in the 1600 meter relay in 3:46.14.
Garrett Malouin was the next top scorer for Fitchburg, finishing second in the 800 meters
in a career best 2:02.33, while combining with Mike Bellio, Mike Carbone, and Devan
Glenny in the 3200 meter relay to finish fifth with a time of 8:47.34. Also contributing to the team’s
efforts by placing in the top six were Derek Paine, third, discus, 123' 5", and shot put,
fifth, 43’ 3.5; Cosenza, high jump, third, 5' 10"; Steve Silvar, discus, fourth, 117’ 4”; and
Tim Douglas, sixth, discus, 114’ 7”.

Track & Field State Qualifying Meet hosted by Fitchburg State College scheduled to get
underway at 9:30 a.m.
May 18, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track & field team finished second in the Mid-Wach A Championship Meet held
Thursday afternoon at Shrewsbury High School. Algonquin Regional finished first in the
meet with 146 points, and by virtue of it’s undefeated dual-meet record versus Mid-Wach
A opponents, was declared Mid-Wach A Champion for 2006. The Red Raiders, whose
only dual meet loss came at the hands of Algonquin Regional, finished second overall in
the league by scoring 97 points, ahead of Shrewsbury, 82 points, North Middlesex
Regional, 70 points, Leominster, 66 points, Milford, 49 points, and Wachusett Regional,
48 points.
The Red Raiders had four first place performances led by Malcolm Wilbur, who won the
100 meters, 11.31, was second in the 200 meters, 23.49, and long jump, 20’ 1.75, and
fourth in the triple jump, 39’ 6.5”. Also capturing first place was Dave Cosenza in the
high jump, 6’; Derek Paine in the discus; 123’ 9”; and the 1600 meter relay team
comprised of Cosenza, Mike Carbone, Will Schuerman, and Joel Gomez, 3:44.91.
Also scoring valuable points in the meet were Garrett Malouin, second in the two mile,
10:20.34, and 800 meters, 2:05.22; Carbone, second, mile, 4:48.00; Mike Bellio, German
Valdez, Devan Glenny, and Gomez, fourth, 3200 meter relay, 9:10.0; Paine, fifth, shot

May 10, 2006 - The District Class Meets scheduled for this Saturday, May 13, have been
rescheduled due to predicted inclement weather, to next Saturday, May 20, starting at 9:30 a.m., at Crocker Field.
St. John's (Shrewsbury) had originally been slated as the host, but due to scheduling conflicts at the Pioneer's facility,
the meet had to be moved to a different site. The resulting change has also caused the cancellation
of the Red Raiders final dual meet versus Oakmont Regional, which would have had Fitchburg competing in
three meets over a six day period, which is a violation of M.I.A.A. contest rules.
May 8, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track & field team improved to 5-1, defeating arch-rival Leominster, 81-64, in a
Mid-Wach A contest held Monday afternoon at Crocker Field.
The Red Raiders were led by Derek Paine, who finished first in two events, the discus,
127' 7", and the shot put, 41' 2". Individual firsts went to Mike Bellio, two mile, 10:40.0;
Johann Schuerman, pole vault, 8’ 6"; Dave Cosenza, high jump, 6'; Malcolm Wilbur, 200
meters, 23.5; Garrett Malouin, 800 meters, 2:03.3; and the 1600 meter relay team
comprised of Bellio, Mike Carbone, Cosenza, and Will Schuerman, 3:41.5.
Finishing in second for Fitchburg were Steve Silvar, shot put, 39' 9", and discus, 106';

May 4, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team lost their first meet of the
season, 78.5-66.5, falling to Mid-Wach A opponent, Algonquin Regional, at Crocker
Field.
The Red Raiders were led by triple winner Malcolm Wilbur, who captured the long jump,
20’ 2.5”; the 100 meters, 11.4, and the 200 meters, 23.7. Derek Paine and Garrett
Malouin were double winners, winning the shot put, 42’ 10.5”, and the discus, 121’ 7”;
and the two mile, 10:32.8, and 800 meters, 2:02.9. Individual wins went to Dave
Cosenza, high jump, 6’ 2”; Mike Dateo, pole vault, 10’ 6”; Mike Carbone, mile, 4:48.9;
and the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Mike Bellio, German Valdez, Cosenza, and
Joel Gomez, 3:50.9.
Second place performances were turned in by Will Schuerman, javelin, 138’ 4”; and Tim

May 1, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track & field team improved to 4-0 on the season, defeating Mid-Wach A opponent,
Wachusett, 75-70, at Crocker Field.
For the second meet in a row the Red Raiders overcame an early deficit by winning the
final five events, with the fifth event, the 1600 meter relay comprised of Mike Bellio,
Mike Carbone, Dave Cosenza, and Joel Gomez, clinching the meet with a first place time
of 3:44.1. Fitchburg had four double winners in the meet as Will Schuerman captured the
triple jump, 38’ 9.75”, and the javelin, 134’ 3”; Cosenza, 400 meters, 54.1, and the high
jump, 6’; Malcolm Wilbur, 100 meters, 11.3, and the 200 meters, 23.6; and Garrett
Malouin, mile, 4:48.7, and the 800 meters, 2:07.5. Derek Paine and Johann Schuerman
each picked up a first place for Fitchburg, winning the discus, 127’, and 300 meter
intermediate hurdles, 44.9, respectively.

April 29, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track
& field discus team comprised Derek Paine, Steve Silvar, and Tim Douglas captured first
place Saturday with a combined distance of 341' 10", to lead the Red Raiders to a tenth
place finish overall at the 30th Annual District E Robert Duncan Invitational Division I Relays held
in Hudson at the Morgan Bowl track & field facility.
Also scoring in the meet with top six performances was the 3200 meter relay team
comprised of Devan Glenny, Mike Carbone, Mike Bellio, and Garret Malouin, which
finished fourth in 8:43.1; the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Malcolm Wilbur, Will
Schuerman, Dave Cosenza, and Joel Gomez, sixth, 3:42.5; the sprint medley relay team
comprised of Cosenza, Schuerman, Wilbur, and Gomez, sixth, 3:54.8; and the distance

April 26, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team
earned their third win of the season in exciting fashion, defeating North Middlesex
Regional, 74-71, at the Patriots' home track Wednesday afternoon in Townsend.
The Red Raiders came back from a two point deficit in the final event, the 1600 meter
relay, as the team of Mike Bellio, Garrett Malouin, Dave Cosenza, and Joel Gomez ran
their fastest time of the season in 3:45.7 to clinch the victory for the Red Raiders.
Winning two events each were Will Schuerman, who captured the javelin, 128' 1", and
the triple jump, 37' 11.5", while Derek Paine picked up wins in the shot put, 41' 2", and
the discus, 122' 11". Also finishing first were Cosenza, high jump, 5' 6"; Bellio, two
mile, 10:59.0; Mike Dateo, pole vault, 11'; Johann Schuerman, 300 meter intermediate
hurdles, 44.9; Malouin, mile, 4:36.7; and Mike Carbone, 800 meters, 2:12.3.
Finishing second for Fitchburg were Tim Douglas, javelin, 119' 5"; Devan Glenny, two

April 13, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team
earned their second win of the season, defeating Mid-Wach A opponent, Milford, 87-57, at
Crocker Field.
The Red Raiders were led by multiple winner Malcolm Wilbur, who captured four events.
Wilbur picked up wins in the long jump, 18' 9.25", triple jump, 39' 6.5", 100 meters, 11.3,
and the 200 meters, 23.7. Derek Paine was a double winner for Fitchburg capturing the
shot put, 39' 7", and the discus, 124'. Individual wins went to Dave Cosenza, high jump,
5' 8"; Mike Dateo, pole vault, 10'; Mike Bellio, two mile, 10:59.8; and the 1600 meter
relay team comprised of Bellio, Will Schuerman, Cosenza, and Joel Gomez, 3:51.0.

April 10, 2006 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track & field team opened its' season with a victory, defeating Mid-Wach A rival Shrewsbury
81-64, Monday afternoon at the Colonials' track.
The Red Raiders were led by William Schuerman and Garrett Malouin, who captured two events
each. Schuerman captured the triple jump, 38' 10.25", and the javelin, 141' 10", while Malouin picked up
wins in the mile, 4:50.9, and the 800 meters, 2:11.0. Schuerman also finished second in the 200 meters
in 25.1. Other first place performances were turned in by Dave Cosenza, high jump, 5' 10"; Derek Paine, discus, 121' 10"; Mike Dateo,
pole vault, 10'; Johann Schuerman, 110 meter high hurdles, 18.9; Malcolm Wilbur, 100 meters, 11.6; and the 1600 meter relay
