June 12, 2001- Named Midland-Wachusett A League All-Stars for 2001 were
Bryan Marotta, Raymel Scott and Jonathan Shea for capturing first place in their respective events at the Mid-Wach A League Championships.
Named Sentinel & Enterprise All-Stars were Adam Renquinha, Blaine Colacchio, Scott, and Shea. Shea was also selected a Worcester Telegram & Gazette
All-Star for his first place finish in the 300 intermediate hurdles at the District E MIAA Track & Field Tournament.
June 5 & 6, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s
outdoor track team concluded their season in fine fashion Wednesday evening, competing
to a fourth place finish in the team standings at the 19th annual Central Massachusetts
District E Decathlon, held at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. The final
scores in the meet were Millbury Memorial, 15,214, Lunenburg, 15,083, Wachusett, 14,914,
and Fitchburg, 14,909. The decathlon is a two day event featuring the 100 meters, long jump, triple
jump, high jump, discus, shot put, javelin, 110 meter high hurdles, 400 meters and 1500
meters.
The Red Raiders were led by junior Blaine Colacchio, who finished 6th overall with 5,207
points, and also set a new Fitchburg High School decathlon record in the shot put with a
throw of 41’.25". Also setting records for the Red
Raiders were sophomore Ryan Logan, who finished 7th overall, while setting a new
Fitchburg High School decathlon record for individual points by a sophomore with 5,134
points, and Bryan Marotta, who broke the decathlon record in the 1500 meters with a time
of 4:20.1. Colacchio and Logan combined with senior Jon Shea, 27th, 4,568 points, to set
a new school record for total team points at 14,909.
Also competing for Fitchburg were: Raymel Scott, 13th, 4,952 points; Ben Roberts,
22nd, 4,665 points; Jordan Dursa, 54th, 3,864 points; Marotta, 76th, 3,554 points; Adam
Basilio, 79th, 3,535 points; Andrew Bisol, 85th, 3,332 points; Ethan Shea, 112th, 2,666
points; Chris Kanclerowicz, 117th, 2,439 points; and Adam Dufour, 124th, 2,114 points.
June 4, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track team ran to a fifth place finish at the first-ever District E Weightmen’s Pentathlon
held at Blackstone-Millville Regional High School Monday afternoon. Points scored in
the meet were based on performances in the 100 meters, shot put, discus, long jump, and
400 meters.
The Red Raiders were led by junior Hector Santiago, who threw the discus a personal best
137’7", to lead the field an establish a meet record in that event. Santiago, 14th, 2,239
points, senior Mike Gabriele, 16th, 2,095 points, and sophomore John Lewis II, 18th,
1,796 points, combined for a team total of 6,037 points to finish fifth overall. Also
competing for Fitchburg were junior Joe Rouse, 25th, 1,303 points, sophomore Adam
Cormier, 27th, 1,089 points, and freshmen Brad McNamara and Howard Burton, 29th,
980 points, and 32nd, 866 points, respectively.
Along with Santiago’s throw in the discus, individual and team records
were set by Santiago in the long jump, 15’2", and 400 meter run, 1:09.9; and by Gabriele
in the shot put, 42’, and 100 meter dash, 13.3 seconds.
Fitchburg ends it’s season Tuesday and Wednesday when it travels to The College of the
Holy Cross in Worcester to compete in the 19th annual District E Central Massachusetts
Decathlon.
June 2, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's outdoor
track team received solid performances from two of it's top performers Saturday morning
at the MIAA All-State meet held Saturday at rain swept Worcester State College. Junior
Bryan Marotta led the way with a season best 9:47.03 in the 2 mile run, despite a driving
rain, to finish sixteenth overall, while senior Raymel Scott ran the 200 meter dash in 23.2
seconds in the semi-finals, but did not qualify for the final. Marotta concludes his outdoor
season, while Scott looks to conclude his high school career by representing Fitchburg
High School at the Central Massachusetts Decathlon scheduled to be held at The College of the Holy
Cross this Tuesday and Wednesday. The two day meet gets underway each day at 3:30
p.m.
The Red Raiders weightmen travel to Blackstone-Millville Regional Monday afternoon to
compete in the First District E Weightmen’s Pentathlon. That meet is scheduled to get
underway at 3:45 p.m.
May 26, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track team ran to a sixth place finish at the District E MIAA Track & Field Tournament
held Saturday morning at Worcester State College.
Seniors Jon Shea and Raymel Scott led the Red Raiders, as Shea captured the 300
intermediate hurdles in 42.46, while Scott was second in the 200 meters in a season best
23.02, and was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 41’5.25". Bryan Marotta ran a
season best 9:48.94 in his specialty, the 2 mile, to finish fourth, and then anchored the
3200 meter relay team comprised of Everette Pankey, Tom Laakso, and Loi Trieu to a
sixth place finish in a season best 8:31.77. Also scoring for Fitchburg was sophomore
John Lewis, who threw the discus a season best 127’, to finish sixth.
Also competing in the meet for the Red Raiders were Ryan Logan, triple jump, 40’3.75",
and 110 high hurdles, 17.13; Hector Santiago and Tim Roy, discus, 126’9", and 116’,
respectively; Mike Gabriele, shot put, 45’7.75"; Shea, pole vault, 11’; Adam Renquinha,
400 meters, 53.26; Nick Brandenburg, Jordan Dursa, Logan, and Chris Brodeur, 400
meter relay, 47.54; and Renquinha, Shea, Laakso, and Scott, 1600 meter relay, 3:37.68.
Shea, Scott and Marotta will represent the Red Raiders in next Saturday’s All State Meet,
also at Worcester State College, scheduled to get underway at 10:00 a.m.
May 21, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track team finished it’s dual meet season at 4-2, defeating Mid-Wach B rival Oakmont,
91-54, on the Spartan’s home track.
The Red Raiders were led by Raymel Scott, who captured three events, the 100 meters,
11.7, 200 meters, 23.6, and the triple jump, 38’9.75". Scott also finished second in the
long jump with a leap of 18’2.5". Ben Roberts and Blaine Colacchio were double winners
in the meet as Roberts won the high jump, 6’, and pole vault, 8’6"; while Colacchio
captured the javelin, 131’9", and the 110 meter high hurdles, 16.4. Individual first place
performances went to Ryan Logan, long jump, 18’4.5"; Adam Renquinha, 400 meters,
55.4; Jon Shea, 300 meter intermediate hurdles, 42.6; Mike Gabriele, shot put, 43’10.5";
Bryan Marotta, mile, 4:42.6; and Adam Basilio, Logan, Everette Pankey, and Tom
Laakso, 1600 meter relay, 3:47.0.

at Blackstone-Millville Regional High School.
May 19, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track team captured their third consecutive Mid-Wach A League Championship Meet Saturday
morning at Shrewsbury High School, holding off Wachusett Regional, 141 to 138, in what
became a two team meet. The final scores in the meet were Fitchburg, 141, Wachusett,
138, Milford, 109, Leominster, 73, Shrewsbury, 56, and North Middlesex, 40.
The Red Raiders were once again led by Raymel Scott, who finished first in the 100
meters, 11.48, and the 220 yard dash, 23.20. Scott was also third in both the long jump,
19’8.25", and triple jump, 40’7.5". Bryan Marotta and Jon Shea were Fitchburg’s other
first place performers, winning the 2 mile, 10:07.16, and 330 yard intermediate hurdles,
41.88, respectively. Second place performances were turned in by Ryan Logan, triple
jump, 40’9.5"; Ben Roberts, high jump, 5’8"; Blaine Colacchio, 120 yard high hurdles,
16.33; and Adam Renquinha, 440 yard run, 52.90. Finishing with third place performances
were Tom Laakso, 2 mile, 10:21.96; Shea, pole vault, 11’; Loi Trieu, Craig Babineau,

May 14, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track team suffered their second dual meet loss of the season, falling to Mid-Wach A
opponent Milford, 84-61, at the Scarlet Hawks home track.
The Red Raiders managed only five first place performances in the meet led by Raymel
Scott’s first place finishes in the triple jump, 40’6", and the 200, 23.4. Bryan Marotta also
finished first in two events, winning the 800, 2:08.5, and the 2 mile, 10:17.6. Adam
Renquinha was the Red Raiders other first place performer, winning the 400 meters in
52.1.
Second place performances were turned in by Mike Gabriele, shot put; Jon Shea, pole
vault; Ryan Logan, triple jump and long jump; Blaine Colacchio, high jump and 110 meter
high hurdles; Scott, 100 meters, Everette Pankey, mile; and Adam Basilio, 300

May 12, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track team shocked the Class A field Saturday afternoon winning their first District E
Class A title since 1976. The Red Raiders accomplished the fete by upsetting the meet
favorite, St. John’s, in the final race of the meet, the 1600 meter relay, to clinch the team
title, 92 to 89.
The Red Raiders were led by Raymel Scott, who captured the triple jump, 41’ 9.75", and
anchored the 1600 meter relay comprised of Adam Renquinha, Ben Roberts, and Jon Shea
to a season best 3:32.8. Scott also finished second in the 200 meters in 23.2. Blaine
Colacchio was Fitchburg’s other major point scorer, winning the high jump, 6’, and
finishing third in the 110 high hurdles in 16.1. Bryan Marotta was the Red Raiders other
first place finisher, winning the 2 mile in a season best 9:58.8.
Other point scorers included Shea, 300 intermediate hurdles, 42.6, third, and pole vault,
11’, fourth; Tom Laakso, 2 mile 10:23.4, fourth; Renquinha, 400 meters, 52.8, fourth;

sixth; and Adam Basilio, 300 intermediate hurdles, 44.4, sixth.

May 8, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track team continued to show steady improvement by defeating Mid-Wach A opponent
North Middlesex, 101-44, Tuesday afternoon at Crocker Field.
The Red Raiders had three athletes with multiple first place performances led by junior
Blaine Colacchio, who captured four events, the high jump, 6’, 110 meter high hurdles,
16.5, javelin, 121’11", and the 300 intermediate hurdles, 43.1. Also winning multiple
events were Raymel Scott, who captured the 100 meters, 11.3, and triple jump, 41’9.25",
and Ryan Logan who won the long jump, 19’4.25", and the 400 meters, 56.1. Other first
place performances were turned in by Jon Shea, pole vault, 11’; Tom Laakso, 2 mile,
10:21.5; Mike Gabriele, shot put, 44’8.5"; Tim Roy, discus, 116’8"; Jordan Dursa, 200

May 3, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track team rebounded from their first dual meet loss in three years, overwhelming
Mid-Wach A opponent Shrewsbury, 95-50, at Crocker Field.
The Red Raiders had three athletes with multiple first place performances led by the return
of Raymel Scott, who captured the 100 meters, 11.3, 200 meters, 23.5, and the triple
jump, 39’ 5.75". Fitchburg’s other multiple winners were Blaine Colacchio, in the high
jump, 5’10", 110 meter high hurdles, 16.3, and the 300 intermediate hurdles, 43.7; and
Bryan Marotta in the mile, 4:42.6, and 800 meters, 2:06.5. Other first place performances
were turned in by Jon Shea, pole vault, 11’; Tom Laakso, 2 mile, 10:38.7; Tim Roy,
discus, 117’9"; Ryan Logan, long jump, 19’2.5"; and the 400 meter relay team comprised

May 1, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track team suffered their first dual meet loss dating back to 1998, falling to Mid-Wach A
rival Wachusett Regional, 92-53, at Crocker Field.
The Red Raiders had two athletes with two first place performances each, as Ryan Logan
captured the long jump, 19’1.75", and the triple jump, 38’3", while Blaine Colacchio
captured the 110 high hurdles, 16.3, and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 43.1. Colacchio
also chipped in with two second place performances in the high jump and javelin. Other
first place performances were turned in by Adam Renquinha, 400 meters, 55.1; Tom
Laakso, 800 meters, 2:09.7; and Bryan Marotta, 2 mile, 10:13.1.
Second place performances were turned in by Mike Gabriele, shot put; and Renquinha,

April 28, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track team ran to a ninth place finish at the 25th Annual District E Division I Robert
Duncan Invitational Relays held Saturday morning at St. John’s in Shrewsbury.
Fitchburg was led by it’s 3200 meter relay team comprised of Everette Pankey, Tom
Laakso, Loi Trieu, and Bryan Marotta, which finished second in 8:52.8. Finishing third
was the discus team comprised of Hector Santiago, Tim Roy, and John Lewis, with a
combined distance of 309’4". Finishing fourth for the Red Raiders was the triple jump
team comprised of Ryan Logan, Andrew Bisol, and Jordan Dursa, 107’6.5", and the pole
vault team comprised of Jon Shea, Ben Roberts, and Chris Kanclerowicz, which
compbined for a height of 28’6". Finishing fifth was the distance medley team comprised
of Trieu, Matt Brennan, Laakso, and Marotta, 11:40.3, while the 800 meter relay team
comprised of Adam Renquinha, Colacchio, Basilio, and Logan completed the
scoring, finishing sixth in 1:40.7.
Also competing for Fitchburg were: Logan, Chris Brodeur, and Bisol, long jump, 49’7";
Blaine Colacchio, Ben Roberts, and Jon Shea, high jump, no height; Roy, Marcus
DiNatale, and Mike Gabriele, shot put, 109’8.5"; Colacchio, Adam Dufour, and Tim
Brennan, javelin, 340’2"; Dursa, Brodeur, Bisol, and Josh Venenzia, 400 meter relay, 51.6;

Logan, Dursa, Brodeur, and Jeremy Reid, sprint medley, 4:13.0.

April 24, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor
track team finally opened their dual meet season, defeating arch rival Leominster, 82-62,
Tuesday afternoon at Doyle Field. Despite high winds, and a 15 minute delay due to
lightning, the Red Raiders were able hold off the Blue Devils for their first win of the
season.
Fitchburg was led by three double winners as Ryan Logan captured the long jump, 19’8",
and the triple jump, 40’2.75"; Tom Laakso, mile, 5:02.9, and the 800, 2:17.2; and Ben
Roberts, high jump, 5’10", and pole vault, 8’6". Blaine Colacchio was also a major
contributor finishing first in the javelin, 140’4", second in the high jump and 300
intermediate hurdles, and third in the 110 meter high hurdles. Also finishing first were
Marcus DiNatale, shot put, 39’1"; Everette Pankey, two mile, 11:47.3; and Hector
Santiago, discus, 108’11".
Finishing in second place were: Mike Gabriele, shot put; Raymel Scott, 100 yard dash,
and 200 meter dash; Adam Renquinha, 400 meters; Andrew Bisol, triple jump; and Tim
Roy, discus. Completing the scoring with third place finishes were: Jon Shea, high jump;
Jeremy Reid, two mile; Roberts, 400 meters; Adam Basilio, 300 intermediate hurdles;
Jordan Dursa, triple jump; Craig Babineau, mile; and Loi Trieu, 800 meters.
Fitchburg travels to St. John’s Saturday morning to compete in the District E Division I
Relay Championships. The meet gets underway at 9:30 a.m.
April 12, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's outdoor track team experienced
their second postponement of the season as their scheduled meet at Milford was postponed once
again due to poor weather conditions. The Red Raiders now open their season at arch-rival Leominster on
Tuesday, April 24. The Milford meet has been rescheduled for Monday, May 14, at 3:30 p.m.
April 2, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's outdoor track team announced today
the postponement of their home opening meet against North Middlesex due to poor weather conditions. The meet
has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 8, at 3:30 p.m.
March 23, 2001 - The defending Mid-Wach A and District E Champion
Fitchburg High School Red Raiders completed their first week of practice Friday afternoon with
over sixty candidates out for this Spring’s squad. The Red Raiders were taken through five days
of light jogging, dynamic stretching, and conditioning drills, with introductory work begun in
the throws and the jumps. The Red Raiders will continue to operate out of the Field House at
the beginning of next week with the hope of moving to Crocker Field by week's end, weather permitting.
The Red Raiders would also like to announce the addition of three new members to the coaching
staff with Phil Moore coming on board to coach the discus and shot put, while Fitchburg High School
alumnus Thomas Paine and Jack Scott take on the responsibilities of coaching the middle school program.
Coach Mike Lavers will move up as head coach of the women's program, concentrating on the distance events,
while veteran coaches Don Woods and Craig Chalifoux continue with their specialties, the javelin, and
long and triple jumps, respectively. Coach Chris Woods will continue to work with pole vaulters and high
jumpers, while overseeing the sprints, hurdles, and relays.
Fitchburg opens it's season on Monday, April 9, at 3:30 p.m., when they host North Middlesex Regional at Crocker
Field.
