Shea’s performance was truly outstanding, as he competed in all ten events, the 100 meters, 110 meter high hurdles, triple jump, discus, long jump, 400 meters, high jump, shot put, javelin and 1500 meters on Thursday, while all other athletes in the competition completed five events each of the two days the decathlon was contested. Shea’s total of 4,187 points earned him 29th overall out of 115 competitors. The Raiders placed ninth as a team as Blaine Colacchio, 31st, 4,090 points, Ben Roberts, 35th, 4,043 points, and Jordan Dursa, 63rd, 3,187 points, combined for 11,320 points in the team competition. The Raiders were led by senior Ben Brideau, who tied for 10th in the high jump at 6’.
The 1600 meter relay team comprised of Jason Quinn, Matt Eppy, Danny Ortiz, and
Adam Renquinha finished 13th in 3:30.66. Quinn also competed in the triple jump, where

May 27, 2000 - The Fitchburg High School boys’ outdoor
track team captured their second District E All-Class title in bizarre fashion Saturday
tying Wachusett Regional for the team title at 54 points each. The Raiders left Worcester
State College believing they had finished third in what was one of the closest team finishes
in the meet’s history. The final scores of the top three teams at the end of the meet were
Wachusett, 54, Sheperd Hill Regional, 53.5, and Fitchburg, 53.
But as the bus drove down Interstate 190 Coach Woods reviewed the results and
discovered there was a problem with the scoring in the 200 meters. Fitchburg’s Raymel
Scott and a Tantasqua runner were listed for a tie for fourth place at 23.3 seconds,
awarding each athlete three points. However, there are no ties in finals of running events.
After a phone call to the tournament director, and a review of the photo, Scott had
actually edged the Tantasqua runner by a hundredth of a second giving him sole
possession of fourth place. With that extra point the Raiders moved from third to
co-champions finishing with 54 points.
The Raiders were led by Jason Quinn who scored in three events, finishing third in the 200
meters, 23.1, fourth in the triple jump, 41’5.5", and combining with Adam Renquinha,
Matt Eppy, and Danny Ortiz in the 1600 meter relay, to finish second in that event with a
season best of 3:30.0. Quinn’s anchoring 400 meter relay split was an impressive 50.5. Also scoring
points in multiple events were Raymel Scott and Harold Mateo, as Scott finished fourth in
the 200 meters, 23.3, while Mateo was sixth in the 100 meters, 11.7. Both then combined
with Ortiz and Tim O’Brien to finish second in the 400 meter relay with a time of 45.1.
Ryan Bourque also scored in two events, finishing sixth in the 2 mile, 10:02.1, while
combining with Joaquin Kilson, Tom Laakso, and Dan Savukoski to finish fifth in the
3200 meter relay with a season best 8:32.2.
Individual point scorers were Ben Brideau in the high jump, third, season best 6’4"; Jon
Shea, pole vault, third, season best 12’; Mike Caron, 300 meter intermediate hurdles,
fourth, 41.9; O’Brien, triple jump, fifth, season best 41’5.25"; and Renquinha, 400
meters, fifth, season best 51.8. Also competing in the meet were Tim Roy, discus; Tim
Caron, shot put; and Bryan Marotta, mile.
The 400 meter relay team and the 1600 meter relay team, along with Quinn, Brideau,

by Norwell High School with the field events starting at 10:00.

high hurdles, 16.12; and Mike Caron, 300 meter intermediate hurdles, 42.12.
However, it was not just the first place performances in the meet which made the difference, but
rather the depth of the team as a whole. Fitchburg had multiple scorers in 15 of the non-relay events,
and failed to score in only one of the 18 events all told. Finishing second in the meet
were: Brideau, high jump; Ryan Bourque, 2 mile; Erik Babineau, Chris Cordio, Tom
Leary and Dan Savukoski, 3200 meter relay; Mateo, 100 meters; Bryan Marotta, mile;
